Places for People has submitted outline plans for 8,500-home Gilston Park Estate in East Hertfordshire.
The housing association is acting as master developer for the project, which will see a series of six villages constructed. The scheme will include 40% affordable housing, which is aligned with the local council’s housing policy.
The project is expected to see Places for People act as the overarching body that oversees construction by other developers and house builders. Gilston Park Estate may also include a large proportion of modular or offsite housing.
A spokesperson for Places for People said: “An outline planning application has been submitted for up to 8,500 new homes at Gilston Park Estate and a full range of supporting infrastructure. Two new crossings of the River Stort have also been put forward for planning permission. These submissions follow extensive community engagement and discussions with local councils.
“As part of the decision-making process, East Herts Council will now run a period of public consultation.”
As well as the new homes, the town will include 500 hectares of green space for exercise, leisure and recreational purposes.
